Traceroute is a classic network diagnostic tool used to track the path packets take to reach a destination. It’s not installed by default on CentOS 8, but adding it only takes a minute.
Step 1: Update Your System
Start by updating your package lists to avoid installation issues:
sudo dnf update
Step 2: Install Traceroute
Use the following command to install traceroute from the default CentOS 8 repositories:
sudo dnf install traceroute
When prompted, press y and hit Enter.
Step 3: Verify Installation
After installation, confirm that traceroute is available:
traceroute --version
You should see version info confirming it’s ready to use.
Step 4: Run Traceroute
To trace the route to a domain or IP address:
traceroute google.com
This will show each hop along the way and how long each one takes. That’s all — traceroute is now installed and working on your CentOS 8 system.
