When working with modern software projects, Git is one of the most essential tools for version control and collaboration. On Windows Server 2025, installing Git is straightforward but requires attention to choosing the right installer and configuring it properly.

Step 1: Download the Git Installer

To start, you need the official Git installer for Windows. The best and most secure option is to download it directly from the official Git website. This ensures you get the latest version that’s compatible with Windows Server 2025.

  1. Open your browser and go to: https://git-scm.com/download/win
  2. The website automatically detects your system and provides the latest Windows installer.

Step 2: Run the Git Installer

Once the installer is downloaded, you’ll need to run it. The installation wizard will guide you through various configuration options. Each option matters because it defines how Git will behave on your Windows Server.

  1. Double-click the downloaded .exe file.
  2. Choose the destination folder (default is usually fine).

  3. Select the components you want to install — leave defaults unless you have specific needs.

  4. Pay attention to the “Path Environment” option — choose “Git from the command line and also from 3rd-party software” for better compatibility.

Step 3: Configure Git During Installation

During setup, you’ll see options to customize how Git integrates with your Windows environment. These are important for performance and compatibility.

  • Default Editor: Choose Nano or vimNotepad++ if you’re unsure; you can change it later.

  • Line Ending Conversions: Pick “Checkout Windows-style, commit Unix-style line endings” (recommended for most use cases).

  • Terminal Emulator: Select Use Windows Terminal or Git Bash depending on your preference.

  • Proceed with the default settings if you are unsure — they are optimized for most users.

Step 4: Complete the Installation

After configuring all options, click Install. The installer will copy files, configure paths, and set up Git on your server. Once completed, you can choose to launch Git Bash immediately:

Click Finish at the end of the setup wizard.

Step 5: Verify Git Installation

After installation, it’s important to confirm that Git is working properly on your Windows Server 2025 system. Open either Command Prompt or Git Bash and run:

git --version

If the installation was successful, you will see the installed Git version displayed. For example:

git version 2.45.1.windows.1

Verify Your Settings
